In 2006, the Methodist Church Ghana established the Methodist Rafiki Satellite Village in Gyaahadze in response to the plight of children from Winneba and its environs who were being exploited by fishermen due to their parents’ financial constraints. The church’s intervention was prompted by the horrific discovery that these children were not only being denied education and exposed to dangerous conditions, but were also used as bait to attract fish if they died. The initiative to build a village to provide intercepted children with care, education, and a fulfilling life was spearheaded by Most Rev Dr. Robert Kwesi Aboagye-Mensah, who was deeply moved by the children’s suffering during a visit to the Afram Plains Mission Circuit. The village was initially planned to be set up at Maamekrobo, but was later relocated to Gyaahadze near Winneba, thanks to a land donation by Nana Heitey, the Chief of Gyaahadze.
